We’ve picked out some of our favourite spots on the South Coast that will gratify your tastebuds and satisfy your stomach.
Local Essence with Asian Fusion at Akilla Cliff Top Restaurant
Akilla is a local chef trained in Asian fusion cuisine. His modest family run restaurant uses only fresh and local produce to create meals of dazzling flavour and intense quality. His Sri Lankan, Thai, Indonesian and Chinese dishes stay true to their origins while being given an extra kick by the exploits of this talented culinary master. Bring your own drinks and maybe a pack of cards as the wait can be extensive during busy periods. Nonetheless, you can put this down to all the laborious care that goes into every dish. We especially recommend the Hot Butter Garlic Prawns and the Chicken Massaman.
Laid Back Surf Vibes and Top Quality Italian Cuisine at Surfing Wombats
Located in the heart of Midigama’s wave riding nirvana, Surfing Wombats is a hostel and Italian Restaurant with a wood fired pizza oven. The dough is handmade everyday by an experienced pizzaiolo from the heart of Napoli and the mozzarella comes from the milk of Water Buffalo reared near Negombo. The quality and authenticity is absolutely unrivalled and probably better than most pizza restaurants outside of Italy. Keeping with the vibes of healthy surfers, they also serve vegan pizzas! If you’re not a fan of pizza then there are some fantastic pastas, salads, desserts and seafood options too. We highly recommend starting with some beef carpaccio, moving on to a calzone and, if you’ve still got room, finishing with a melt in the middle chocolate tortino and vanilla ice cream.
Mouth Watering Dishes With Your Feet in the Sand at Zephyr in Mirissa
Zephyr combines a St. Tropez style ambience with an extensive menu of quality cuisine designed by some seriously passionate foodies. The dishes range from gourmet burgers to freshly grilled local seafood to perfectly cooked pork tenderloin. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, carnivorous or just hungry, you’ll be spoilt for choice and never disappointed. The cocktails are also next level. We highly recommend trying the catch of the day accompanied by a watermelon and ginger martini.
