Sri Lanka’s south coast has an insatiable appeal at the moment and Unawatuna is one of it’s most buzzing hotspots. A Nirbana Experience isn’t complete without exploring the local area and one of our favourite afternoon hangouts is Unawatuna. Here are some suggestions for those with flexible travel plans on our luxury retreat in Sri Lanka.
Surf & Yoga Retreat Day Trips – Unawatuna & Galle
Spoilt for Choice Beach Days
Unawatuna beach is ideal for one of those hazy, lazy days in the sun. Get to the beach early, find your corner of paradise and get ready for some intense relaxation. Unawatuna is constantly evolving with new trendy eateries and watering holes popping up. Head towards one of the cafés and restaurants that dot the shoreline to taste some of the best food on the South Coast. Unawatuna is home to a few of the sought after water villas in Sri Lanka. Once the sun takes its final dip in the ocean for the day, head to the Kingfisher for a beach party and cocktail or chill and relax at Toddy’s by Hopper or maybe you fancy exploring the back lanes and a bite at the Secret Gargen Sushi restuarany. Whatever your fancy, Unawatuna beach is a great day/night out.
Be Mesmerised by Galle Fort
Galle Fort is just a 25 minute Tuk Tuk ride away from Nirbana, Ahangama and a great place to visit before or after your trip to Unawatuna. Enjoy a walk along the rampart to catch a glimpse of the Indian Ocean in all its blue and green glory or check out the colonial architecture and museums. The cobble-stoned streets inside Galle Fort are packed with boutique shops. cafes, gelato bars, spa’s, antiques shops, jewellery stores. If you want to learn about the history and local culture of the South Coast of Sri Lanka a trip to Galle Fort is a must.
Discover the Wild Beauty of Jungle Beach
On the opposite side of Unawatuna’s main beach you’ll find the secluded get away of Jungle beach. As the name indicates, is surrounded by greenery but the beach itself is pretty awesome. If you want to have the beach to yourself (pretty much) start early and try to get there by 8 to 9 am. The beach is accessible via a small hill that you will have to climb down. We highly recommend you take along your snorkelling gear and wander at the world beneath or simply lounge to your heart’s content. You do need to have a certain level of mobility to get to this beach so please do plan ahead if you think you might struggle to climb down the rocky path to this very special secret beach.
