Located on the island’s southern coast, Unawatuna is a coastal town just 6km away from the popular Galle district. The beach at Unawatuna offers some excellent opportunities for swimming owing to its protected bay area with calm ocean ripples. The vast expanse of sand is picturesque amongst amidst a tropical backdrop. At night, the beach comes to life with live music and DJ sets at bars, restaurants and hotels along the strip. Owing to its close proximity to Galle, many opt to make a day trip visit to Unawatuna.
The stretch of sandy coastline along the country’s western district has beaches that are perfect for water sports all year round. Among the coastal towns along this stretch, Bentota is popular with sun bathers and those looking to indulge in some wind surfing. Another highlight is hiring a boat and taking a ride along the Bentota Ganga (River) which is connected to the lagoon. The mangroves are rich in wildlife and perfect for a boat safari.
For travellers who love a good beach party, Hikkaduwa is the place to hangout after dark. Following the coastal town’s revival after the 2004 tsunami, Hikkaduwa and its famous three-day beach fest has earned notoriety for its nightlife. In addition, the Hikkaduwa coral reef is a favourite amongst scuba divers. The reefs here are shallow with an average depth of about 15 metres. A glass bottom boat ride displays the beautiful aquatic life situated within the marine park.
